A Return To Magic…

I apologize for not posting last week. Since last Tuesday was my birthday, I decided to take a week off from blogging. However, I did host a giveaway for an ARC of The Undying Ones: Revenants … that bombed rather spectacularly. As in no one entered it. At all. It’s probably my fault. Rafflecopter is a bit confusing to use, and I thought people would be able to just enter their emails and that was it. Nope, it only gave me the option to have people either follow my twitter or my facebook page – which is all well and good, but I don’t think many people want to bother with that. For the next giveaway, I may see if there’s a way I can set up a google form for a give away, and just have the Boyo pick a name out of a hat, or have people reply to a blog post or a facebook post instead.

Other than that, there is no new news regarding writing this week. I am still plugging away at editing Revenants. And it is tedious work. Editing has never been, nor will it ever be, something I enjoy. But it’s necessary, so here I am toiling along, missing every editing goal I set for myself, because there are so many things I’d rather be doing.

But as a friend pointed out, if I don’t edit, it’ll never get finished, and no one will ever be able to read it.

I swear to God that I am hiring an editor for the next book though. I will save up all my pennies to make that happen.

Enough of me kvetching, though. Let’s get on to the good stuff shall we?

wippet-wednesday

Today is WIPpet Wednesday, and I’ll be sharing another snippet from The Descendants. This one takes place immediately after the last snippet I shared, and it still features Gwalchmei and Vivian. However, for some reason it’s showing up in present tense rather than past tense. Oh well, it’s a snippet from a rough draft, so that can be fixed later on.

Since today’s date is 7/12, here are 10 paragraphs (7+1+2=10)

To say that medieval dancing is nothing like modern ideas of dancing is quite an understatement. Aside from the occasional spin or side to side step, the two styles have absolutely nothing in common. In fact, Vivian is sure that if Gwalchmei and the people around them saw what qualified as dancing back home, they would either pass out from the indecency or try everyone as witches.

She stumbles more than a few times. Bumps into her neighbors, and trods on several feet. Thankfully they all grin and bear it, because they believe that Gwalch is next in line for the throne and that she will be their queen one day, and rather than torture them any further, she steps away as soon as the song ends and finds a good shadowy corner to go and hide in.

Apparently it’s not shadowy enough, because it doesn’t take Gwalch long to find her. She gulps down the amber liquid in the horn cup he hands her and shakes her head no when he tries to drag her back into the circle of light again. “That is not happening.”

“Come on,” He laughs, a good deep laugh that echoes through his body. “You weren’t that bad.”

“I am pretty sure I broke someone’s toe. Let’s just sit here, and relax a little, before I accidentally maim someone else.”

“They will be offended if we don’t celebrate with them.”

“We’re supposedly newly weds remember? I’m sure they won’t mind if we’re caught up in each other’s company for a few minutes. I doubt they’ll miss us. Actually, correction, I know they won’t miss me at all.”

He laughs again, his eyes sparkling and his teeth peaking out through the gap in his coarse red beard. For a split second Vivian can feel her heart stop, and it occurs to her that, maybe the nuns are on to something. Gwalch really isn’t half bad looking, especially now that he’s all cleaned up. Quite a few girls back home would probably fawn over him and his rugged good looks. Especially if someone gave him a good pair of dark jeans and a flannel shirt. She quickly pretends to take another drink from her cup, even though there’s nothing in it, to hide the blush that is threatening to break across her cheeks.

“We can always say that you are too weary and need to return to bed. You are still recovering from an injury.”

“Yes!” Vivian seizes on his suggestion. “Let’s go with that.”

Oh, I’m glad I’m not the only one the tense change happens too. I ended up rewriting after every paragraph on one story because it suddenly switched to present tense. Still, as long as the characters are talking to us, we can fix that later, eh?

I like these two characters. They have a great yin/yang feel to them.

    Happy belated birthday!
Sorry that the giveaway didn’t work out well. Maybe something more simple like: “To enter this giveaway, comment on this post!” would work. I haven’t done a giveaway before so that is a shot in the dark haha…
Is he going to “return to bed” with her??! Maybe I have a dirty mind 🙂

    Cheers,
    Sophie

I found Rafflecoptor really confusing too. There was a way to let people just enter without having to post anything… I think it was titled “free entry” or something, so all they had to was click… I can’t really remember. I’m sorry I wasn’t online much this past week or I would have entered!

This excerpt made me smile – I love the comparison between the medieval dancing and modern. I would’ve been off finding that quiet corner, too. And good on Gwalch for finding a way for Vivian to get away.

I went through a period where I would accidentally drift into present tense all the time. I did it in an English exam in high school and I was so annoyed when I got the paper back and realised!
